Waka is a style of Japanese poetry. A key part of Mikao Usui's original teachings were the recitation of waka as written by the Meiji Emperor. Waka written by the emperor is also known as gyosei.
The picture shows poetry attributed to Ki no Tsurayuki who became a waka poet c. 890. In 905, under the imperial order of Emperor Daigo, he was one of four poets chosen to compile the Kokin Wakashū, an anthology of poetry.
